The 2025 Brier is into the playoffs! This year's tournament is being played in Kelowna, B.C. Scroll down for the pool docs! But first a note about...
THE HEARTS AND BRIER TOURNAMENT FORMATS ARE THE SAME AS LAST YEAR. Yes, this year's tournaments are the same as last year! Format hopefully explained on the entry form, or scroll down, see "How have they changed?" and "Pool Format!" below!
PLAYOFF BONUS POINTS! Good time to remind everyone of this! In the playoffs, your Page Qualifier round picks are interchangeable! So IN EACH QUALIFIER ROUND, if you pick the two winners in either order, you get your full points! And half points for placing a team in either Qualifier Round Game. (Qualifier picks score for exact Qualifier games only, i.e. 1 vs 2 qualifier picks and 3 vs 4 qualifier picks are separate from each other.)
Your Page Playoff picks, however, are NOT interchangeable. You must place a team in their exact playoff for full or half points! But you still get one quarter of your points for placing a team in the wrong playoff!
And you must place a team in the exact Semifinal or Final match to get any points. And score full points for picking the winner, or half points just for placing a team in the correct match. There! I hope that's clear as mud! That's how you are being awarded points!
One last point, some people put their biggest points in the playoffs, and try to ride the playoff bonus points up to the top! Others are more conservative and put lower points in the playoffs. Either way, you have to pick the correct teams in the playoffs to cash in on those bonus points! The winners and the losers! Maximum bonus on any single playoff game is 50% of your assigned points. So obviously 50% of 40 is a fair bit more than 50% of 1 or 2.
Even more explanation of the playoff bonus points can be found by clicking the "Pool Rules and Instructions" link below!
OK OK, let's get at those Pool documents!

Visualizing The Page Playoff System This diagram shows how the Page Playoff system works, nice and simple! Created by k9crazy!
How have they changed?
So the Hearts and Brier tournament formats changed a couple years ago, to include Page Qualifying rounds.
1. There are 18 participating teams in two Pools of 9 teams, Pool A and Pool B. Except, the extra teams are no longer called "Wild Card" teams, there are multiple provincial teams. One Provincial Champion, and any number of additional qualifying teams (three in total - just call them Wild Card teams already!)
2. Only the top 3 teams in the standings in each of Pool A and Pool B advance! Bottom 6 in each pool are OUT.
3. Two "Page Qualifier" rounds. First the 1 vs 2 Qualifier Round: The 1st place A team plays the 2nd place B team, and the 1st place B team plays the 2nd place A team. Two games. Winners advance to the 1 vs 2 Page Playoff, losers drop to the second Page Qualifier.
4. Second is the 3 vs 4 Qualifier Round: The 3rd place A team plays the loser of the first 1v2 qualifier, and the 3rd place B team plays the loser of the second 1v2 qualifier. The winners of these advance to the 3 vs 4 Page Playoff; the losers are OUT!
5. Now back to normal: The "Page Playoff" round. The 4 qualifying teams above now play a standard Page Playoff. Winner of 1-2 goes straight to the final; loser meets the winner of the 3-4 playoff in the semifinal. Semifinal winner goes to the final; losers of semifinal and 3-4 playoff are OUT. A standard Page Playoff. And that's it!
POOL FORMAT! This is the second year with the Qualifying round, so our format continues from last year, unchanged. So again you will have to:
1. Pick the winners of the selected Round Robin games;
2. Pick the top 3 teams in each of Pool A and Pool B who you think will advance to the Playoff Round;
3. Put the 1st and 2nd place teams from each Pool in the 1 vs 2 Page Qualifier games, and pick the winners; (that's A1 vs B2 and B1 vs A2);
4. Put the LOSERS of the 1v2 Qualifier games into the 3v4 Page Qualifier games, to play the 3rd place teams from each Pool, and pick the winners; (that's A3 vs loser of A1vB2, and B3 vs loser of B1vA2);
5. Now put winners from the all the Qualifying games into the Final Page Playoff, the 1v2 qualifier winners into the 1-2 playoff, and the winners of the 3v4 qualifier into the 3-4 playoff, and pick the winners;
6. Do the same with the Semifinal and Final games. And finally,
7. Apply rank points to ALL your selections (same as EVER). That's it!
POOL ENTRY FEE! Once again, since there's only 2 curling pools this spring, we will continue with the new higher entry fee. As suggested by some of you. The Hearts and Brier pools entry fees are $5.00! Only heard good feedback about the new fees, so, they're here to stay!
ENTRY FEE DEADLINE. Fees are still due at the start of the pool! Give or take a day or two. You can pay in person, E-transfer, or snail mail. Unless you have a pool credit balance, from previous winnings, in which case you're covered!
TIME CHANGE! Just like every year! The Brier Championship Weekend is our time change weekend. We Spring Forward to Daylight Savings Time. This year's tournament in Kelowna BC is no exception! They'll continue to be 2 hours ahead of us.
OK enough talk! Let's get at that entry form! Instructions galore on page 2 of the form!
