The 2021 World Women's Curling Championships Pool The Women's Worlds ran from Friday, April 30th to May 9th, Mother's Day, do I have to say it, from the Curling Bubble in Calgary, Alberta! And our winner.. S again... Al and Wendy again! The spring of repeat winners!

Oh and one more thing... Since there's (normally) only two curling pools instead of the 4 we used to have, we're going to continue with the slightly higher entry fee... $5.00! Hope I didn't scare anybody! Look... two pools at 5 each is $10... the 4 pools I used to run were $2 each so a total of $8 for the lot of them. That's just $2 more! But yes less chances to win. Though the prizes will be 2 and 1/2 times higher too! Let's continue with this and please let me know whether you like it or not! (April 2021: Well looks like we're going with the $5 pools. Fair enough! For curling. As for the CFL Football... not sure yet. There may well be a season!)

The 2020 Pool Season

The Return of the Hearts and Brier Curling Pools

Yes it's been 4 years since either of these pools! Thinking I may well have time for these again this year so here goes!

The Spring 2020 Curling Pools!
The 2020 Tournament of Hearts Pool This one's done! Played in Moose Jaw, Sask. Our winner was Hugh Carmichael, our curling pool friend from Kelowna! Click the link to see the final results!
The 2020 Brier Pool This one's obviously done too!! Played in Kingston, Ontario. And our winner was: Darlene Smith as k9crazy! Click to see full details of other winners and everything!

Oh and one more thing... Since there's only two curling pools instead of the usual 4, I'm going to try them with a slightly higher entry fee... $5.00! Hope I didn't scare anybody! Look... two pools at 5 each is $10... the 4 pools I used to run were $2 each so a total of $8 for the lot of them. That's just $2 more! But yes less chances to win. Though the prizes will be 2 and 1/2 times higher too! Let's give it a shot and please let me know if you like it or not!

More for 2020: ... A Last Man Standing Hockey Pool???
Yes sounds crazy, but I got the bug from a fundraiser pool a guy at work runs. So I thought I'd try one too, but with a lower entry fee of course! $2? $5? What do you like? S/B running in the last half of March. Guess this never happened, oh well.

And finally... The 2020 CFL pools.
Yes will no doubt do these as usual! Same format, same low price! More details as they get closer. Guess this never happened either. Stupid Covid! I hate it! (he said in 2021)

A Lengthy description of the new Hearts and Brier tournament and pool formats, introduced in Spring 2020

OK first, the actual tournaments have changed since 2016. Which means the pools will have to change too. Here's a summary of the format for both the Hearts and the Brier since 2018:

  • 1. Starts with a single Wild Card Qualifying game between the top two ranked Canadian teams who have not already qualified for the tournament. Winner stays as Wild Card, loser goes home. This game does not count toward the Round Robin standings.
  • 2. Now the 16 participating teams are placed into two pools, A and B, 8 in each pool. Each pool plays a 7-game round robin.
  • 3. After these initial round robins, the top 4 teams from each pool advance to a championship round, and play 4 more games each - each A team plays all 4 B teams, and each B team plays all 4 A teams.
  • 4. After this round, all the championship round teams are ranked as a single group, based on their combined round robin and championship round records, and the top 4 proceed to a standard Page Playoffs format. 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4 playoffs, a semifinal, and a final. With no Bronze match.

That's my understanding of the tournaments! Think it's about right.

And now here's what you'll be asked to do in the pools for both the Hearts and the Brier:

  • 1. Pick the winner of the Wild Card play-in game. Depending on who wins the Manitoba Scotties Feb 2nd, participants will be two of: Jennifer Jones, Tracey Fleury, or Kerri Einarson. You will see who it is on the Entry Form. Same applies to the Brier, except it will be guy teams I guess!
  • 2. Pick the winners of all the selected A and B pool Round Robin games. There's 14 draws of the initial Round Robins. I'll try to pick the hard games of course!
  • 3. NOW you must select who will be the TOP 4 teams in each of the A and B pools. Who do you think will advance to the Championship Round. In order. You will get full points for ranking a team exactly, and partial points for picking a team but in the wrong place. PLUS you will get a BONUS POINT for each of your teams' Championship Round wins! Up to 4 points for each team.
  • 4. And finally, you will have to predict which 4 teams will make it to the final playoffs, and pick the winners in a standard Page Playoff (with no Bronze match).
  • 5. AND REALLY FINALLY, you will apply the usual RANK POINTS to your picks, including the Wild Card play-in game, and your picks for the top 4 teams in each pool, and the final playoffs. AND THEN SUBMIT YOUR FORM BY THE FRIDAY EVENING DEADLINE.

That's it man. Wow. Sounds crazy. But it will work! I'm already planning the spreadsheets! Really the only brand new thing is picking what teams advance to the Championship Round!

    So those curling pools run:
HEARTS POOL: FRIDAY, FEB 14 to SUNDAY, FEB 23.
BRIER POOL: FRIDAY, FEB 28 to SUNDAY, MARCH 8.
